Advancements in Smart Sensors for Sustainable Industrial Systems Unveiled at Sensor + Test 2024
STMicroelectronics took part in SENSOR + TEST 2024, a global trade fair held in Nuremberg, Germany from June 11th to 13th, 2024. With over 5,000 attendees, the event highlighted the latest developments in sensor technology. It served as a valuable platform for STMicroelectronics to engage with customers and partners, as well as to discover potential business prospects.
At the event, we showcased our newest sensing technologies designed to improve the efficiency and safety of industrial systems. Our products demonstrated progress in fields such as monitoring equipment conditions, using low-power vision, enhancing intelligent perception, and tracking current levels. This post will discuss some of the main demonstrations available for attendees to engage with.
The ISM330BX is a flexible IMU used for monitoring the conditions of machinery, robots, and household appliances. It includes a 3-axis digital gyroscope and accelerometer for detecting anomalies in water systems and pumps. This integrated system also provides intelligence for monitoring conditions, tracking 3D orientation, and measuring vibrations.
The IMU is well-suited for monitoring the condition of equipment due to its 3-axis accelerometer that has a low-noise, wide-bandwidth (2 kHz) frequency response. This feature enables it to meet strict ISO-10816 vibration severity standards. In addition to condition monitoring, the ISM330BX can also be utilized in robotics applications. It provides reliable 3D orientation tracking with sensor fusion low power (SFLP) technology, allowing for low-power operation without sacrificing accuracy. Furthermore, its vibration sensing capabilities make it a great fit for robotic systems.
The system has various features such as measuring and compensating for vibrations, detecting anomalies to identify faults, and sensing water leaks with Qvar technology. This package is included in STMicroelectronics' program that ensures availability and support for at least 10 years after the product is introduced. This is important for applications that have long development cycles or extended lifespans in the field.
The TSC2020 current sense amplifier is well-suited for applications such as motor control, battery management systems, and solenoid valves. It offers precise measurements with minimal offset voltage (up to ±150 µV) and drift (0.5 µV/°C), low gain error (up to 0.3%) and drift (3.5 ppm/°C), and can be used in systems with a wide common-mode voltage range (-4V to +100V) for high voltage applications.
The ability to sense bidirectional current provides flexibility, while the high level of rejection of common-mode noise (at least 100 dB) reduces interference for accurate measurements. The design of this current sensing system includes built-in EMI filters, improved rejection of PWM signals, a wide range of operating temperatures (-40°C to +125°C), and qualification for automotive use according to AEC-Q100 standards. Additionally, users have the option to choose from internal fixed gain settings (20V/V, 50V/V, or 100V/V) to avoid the need for external resistors. The versatile pin layout allows for both bidirectional and unidirectional current sensing using only two reference voltage pins (Vref1 and Vref2). The TSC2020 is available in SO8 and MiniSO8 packages, which helps to reduce the space required on the PCB. This device is part of STMicroelectronics' wide range of current sense amplifiers, offering a diverse selection of high-performance options.
The VD55G1 is a new type of advanced vision system that is small and energy-efficient. It has a global shutter sensor with 0.56MP resolution, making it perfect for compact devices like AR/VR glasses. The sensor's pixel design is 2.16µm, allowing for a small size of 2.73 x 2.16 mm². In addition to its size, the VD55G1 is known for its low power consumption, making it ideal for devices like security cameras that run on batteries. It also has a smart feature that allows it to sleep in a low power mode and only activate when needed, saving energy and improving efficiency.
Additionally, the VD55G1 camera is equipped with built-in features such as automatic exposure adjustment and noise reduction, resulting in superior image quality. It is capable of removing background noise and capturing event frames with synchronized data output. The camera is designed for easy integration with MIPI CSI-2 output and I²C/I3C interfaces.
STMicroelectronics has unveiled the STHS34PF80, a cutting-edge uncooled infrared sensor designed for detecting occupancy in various applications. Setting it apart from traditional PIR sensors, the STHS34PF80 is capable of detecting both stationary and moving objects within an 80° field of view. This is made possible by its high sensitivity (2000 LSB/°C) in the 5 µm to 20 µm wavelength range.
Moreover, this sensor can identify the presence of humans within a range of 4 meters without the use of large Fresnel lenses, and is easy to incorporate due to its compact size of 3.2 x 4.2 x 1.455 mm LGA package. The sensor contains algorithms that can detect both presence and movement, reducing the need for external microcontrollers. This feature helps the sensor consume very little power, only 10 µA at 1Hz, which supports environmentally friendly product design.
