Fujitsu Australia Limited and The Australian National University have agreed to collaborate on creating a quantum research facility in Australia. This partnership aims to provide industry professionals, researchers, academics, and students with access to advanced quantum technology. The organizations will work together to establish a center for quantum research and potentially develop a quantum computer on site.

In line with Australia's National Quantum Strategy to enhance Australia's quantum research and industry to be globally competitive, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines a strategic partnership between Fujitsu and a top Australian university. The partnership aims to leverage quantum technologies for the advancement of local businesses and the global community.

Graeme Beardsell, Executive Vice President and CEO of Fujitsu Oceania, stated that Fujitsu is focusing on future advancements in computing. By investing in quantum research and forming strategic partnerships, such as with ANU, Fujitsu is leading the way in developing the first fault-tolerant quantum computer globally. This effort is not just about technology, but also about enabling a new wave of innovation.

Australia is dedicated to leading in quantum technology, and Fujitsu is actively contributing to this goal. Rather than just creating these advancements, we are also sharing them, promoting cooperation, and trusting that the next significant progress in quantum technology will arise from a worldwide network of talented individuals working together to create beneficial technology.

In a partnership, Fujitsu will allow ANU researchers and academics to use their quantum systems and simulators in Japan. Fujitsu is working with RIKEN to develop a 256-qubit quantum computer by March 2025 and a quantum computer with up to 1000 qubits by fiscal year 2026. This collaboration ensures that ANU will continue to have access to the most advanced quantum technology available.

ANU and Fujitsu will work together to create educational modules focused on utilizing Fujitsu's quantum technologies to enhance research on quantum computing.

Plans to develop quantum computers on location

Aside from sharing knowledge, the project will also focus on establishing a quantum computer at ANU to assist local researchers, as well as government and industry professionals, in gaining skills in quantum computing.

Australian professionals will have the opportunity to utilize a quantum computer on-site, giving them access to new and developing technologies for conducting cutting-edge research in areas such as cryptography, material science, and quantum simulations.

According to Professor Lachlan Blackhall, who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at The Australian National University, the partnership with Fujitsu aligns with ANU's goal of advancing education in new technologies like quantum computing. This collaboration will also support the development of a skilled workforce in quantum computing in Australia.

ANU is thrilled about the partnership with Fujitsu, as it will leverage the University's expertise in quantum optical physics and quantum algorithms. This collaboration will not only strengthen the nation's dedication to fundamental quantum physics but also enable the application of research findings to practical opportunities in the quantum realm.

Fujitsu is working on developing a 256-qubit and 1,000-qubit superconducting quantum computer in collaboration with RIKEN within the next two years. Apart from this, Fujitsu has also gained knowledge and skills in quantum technologies.

– A hybrid quantum computing platform is being developed which combines a 64-qubit superconducting quantum computer with a quantum simulator to address quantum bit errors. This platform utilizes a computing workload broker, an AI-based software that optimizes computing by automatically combining different resources and algorithms.

– Fujitsu's quantum computing research and development covers various technical areas, including quantum devices and platform software applications. They are actively creating new algorithms for applications such as chemistry calculations, financial systems, and drug discovery.

– Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has placed an order for a gate-based superconducting quantum computer system from Fujitsu. This system is designed to eventually scale to hundreds of qubits.
