Enhancing Security at the Austrian Grand Prix: Aaronia’s AARTOS High-Speed Drone Detection System Keeps Formula 1 Weekend Safe

During the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Austrian Grand Prix 2024 in Spielberg, the security teams prioritized protecting against unauthorized drones. To achieve this, they utilized the AARTOS DDS system, known for its effectiveness in detecting high-speed drones. The system was installed in a mobile version within a Mercedes Sprinter to enhance security for the audience, drivers, and crews at the event.

It is important for security officials at large public events to incorporate drone detection and defense measures into their security plans. The threat of drones, including seemingly harmless hobby drones, should not be overlooked, especially considering their potential for targeted attacks. Unfortunately, there is a lack of knowledge in the field of drone detection and defense, resulting in the use of inadequate solutions or no solution at all.

During the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Austrian Grand Prix 2024, the security officials were already familiar with the AARTOS DDS system due to its successful use at Airpower 2022. It was evident that Aaronia AG's solution would be the top choice for drone protection at the event. Aaronia's experts provide AARTOS DDS as a comprehensive service package that can easily integrate into the current security setup. The advanced AARTOS X9 version, housed in a specially designed Mercedes Sprinter, can be deployed within minutes and contains all the essential components for efficient drone defense.

The AARTOS system is able to track the position, speed, and altitude of drones quickly by scanning the entire frequency spectrum, including different frequencies simultaneously. This allows for the detection of all drones using radio signals. Real-time tracking of both the drone and the operator is provided by the AARTOS system, with the help of Aaronia's proprietary software RTSA-Suite PRO. This software can identify most commercially available drones, take control of them if needed, and safely land them. Authorized security authorities can access all data through the mobile app, ensuring they are aware of the drone and operator's current location in real time and can respond accordingly.

Stephan Kraschansky, the CEO of Aaronia Austria, mentioned that they have observed many drones flying near restricted areas where flights are not allowed. They have had to step in and intervene multiple times. Usually, just warning the pilots was enough to stop their actions, but in some instances, they had to take control of the drones and safely land them to prevent any potential danger. Security officials were also involved in handling the drone pilots during these incidents.

By implementing measures to prevent illegal drone use, the safety of both spectators and drivers was guaranteed throughout the event. The weekend included multiple crashes on the race track involving Formula 1 cars, leading to an thrilling race weekend. George Russell's win secured the Mercedes team's first victory of the season, leaving him in third place with a smile on his face.

The experts from Aaronia showcased a drone detection system that is fast, reliable, and efficient, setting a new record in the process. They achieved a lap time of 7:14.29 in a Mercedes Sprinter, making them the holders of the fastest lap for mobile drone detection systems in Spielberg. Their time was only 6:06.60 behind the fastest lap of the race, which was set by Fernando Alonso in an Aston Martin.
