Enhancing Security at the Austrian Grand Prix: Aaronia’s High-Speed Drone Detection System AARTOS Ensures Safety During Formula 1 Weekend in Spielberg

During the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Austrian Grand Prix 2024 in Spielberg, the security teams utilized the AARTOS DDS system by Aaronia to detect and prevent illegal drone activity. With the increasing threat of drones at large events, protecting the safety of attendees, drivers, and staff is crucial. The AARTOS system, known for being the most powerful on the market, was deployed in a mobile version inside a Mercedes Sprinter to enhance security measures.

It is important for security officials at large public events to incorporate drone detection and defense into their security plans. Even seemingly harmless hobby drones can pose a risk and should not be underestimated, especially when considering the potential for targeted attacks. Unfortunately, there is a lack of knowledge in the field of drone detection and defense, leading to the use of inadequate solutions or none at all.

The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Austrian Grand Prix 2024 had a different security situation compared to previous events. The security officials were already familiar with the AARTOS DDS system, as it had been successfully used at Airpower 2022. It was evident that Aaronia AG's drone protection solution would be the top choice for ensuring security during the race weekend. The experts at Aaronia provide AARTOS DDS as a comprehensive service package that can easily be integrated into the existing security setup. The advanced AARTOS X9 version, housed in a specially designed Mercedes Sprinter, can be deployed quickly and includes all the necessary components for effective drone protection.

The system can accurately track drones in terms of their location, speed, and altitude, enabling quick detection of drone activities. It scans various frequencies to detect drones using radio signals. The AARTOS system offers real-time tracking of both the drone and its operator, with the help of Aaronia's RTSA-Suite PRO software. This software can recognize most commercially available drones, take control of them if needed, and safely land them. Authorized security authorities can access this data through a mobile app, allowing them to stay informed about the drone's current location and the operator's whereabouts in real time.

Stephan Kraschansky, the CEO of Aaronia Austria, stated that there have been many drone sightings near no-fly zones, leading to several interventions. Most of the time, warnings were enough to stop the pilots from misbehaving. However, in a few instances, they had to take control of the drones and safely land them to prevent any danger. Security officials also dealt with the drone pilots during these incidents.

This measure guaranteed that both spectators and drivers were protected from unauthorized drone activity throughout the entire event. The weekend was notable for the collisions on the racetrack involving Formula 1 cars, leading to an exhilarating race weekend where George Russell claimed the first win of the season for the Mercedes team, finishing in third place with a smile.

During the demonstration, the Aaronia specialists showcased a drone detection system that was both quick and dependable. They also achieved a lap time of 7:14.29 in the Mercedes Sprinter, setting a new record for mobile drone detection systems in Spielberg. Their lap time was only 6:06.60 behind the fastest lap driven by Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin during the race.
