Enhancing RF & Microwave Devices for Better Satellite Communication: The Innovative Work of INSPIRE Faculty Fellow Dr. Debidas Kundu

Dr. Debidas Kundu, an INSPIRE Faculty Fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee, is focused on enhancing technology for better satellite communication. Specifically, he is working on developing a durable enclosure for radar antennas that can be utilized in defense and strategic industries.
He has created two absorbers for his project that can help avoid detection by radar systems and also assist in keeping communication secure.
He is currently working on creating a reflectarray antenna that is broadband and linearly polarized. This type of antenna is flat, compact, and can offer a high level of signal amplification. The design he is developing is intended for use in small, lightweight satellites known as CubeSats. By deploying a network of CubeSats in low earth orbit (LEO), it is possible to establish global connectivity through the internet of things (IoT). The reflectarray antenna he is working on can facilitate communication between individual CubeSats, reducing the time delay in signal transmission.
Dr. Kundu is a faculty member funded by INSPIRE from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, working at IIT Roorkee. He is focusing on surface electromagnetics, which is a growing area within RF and microwave technology. His goal is to enhance the capabilities of current RF and microwave devices and circuits using surface electromagnetics. Dr. Kundu has established a facility at IIT Roorkee for measuring reflection-transmission responses using parallel plate waveguides for a broad range of frequencies.
He plans to apply for patents for some of his projects and continue developing his work on absorbers and radomes, which have uses in defense and strategic industries. He also intends to progress with his research on reflectarrays, which can be utilized in satellite communication.
