Enhancing Electronic Detonation Systems with Vishay’s TANTAMOUNT Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitors: Robust Design and Stringent Testing for Reliable Performance in Harsh Environments

Vishay's solid tantalum chip capacitors improve the performance of electronic detonation systems. TANTAMOUNT devices have a strong design and low 0.005CV DCL, as well as rigorous testing standards to guarantee dependable detonation in challenging conditions.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has released a new line of TANTAMOUNT surface-mount solid tantalum molded chip capacitors that are made for electronic detonation systems. These capacitors, known as the Vishay Sprague TX3 series, have a strong mechanical design and low leakage current, as well as strict testing standards. They offer improved performance and reliability compared to regular tantalum capacitors and MLCCs.

The capacitors being introduced today have a low DCL value of 0.005CV and a high energy density compared to other types of capacitors. This means they can provide more energy for reliable ignition, making them well-suited for use in remote detonation systems in mining and demolition. The use of tantalum anode technology and Vishay's high-quality dielectric formation guarantee stable electrical performance even in tough conditions.

In order to guarantee reliability, the TX3 series capacitors undergo more rigorous testing compared to standard commercial options. Each capacitor is tested for surge current using standard methods and undergoes two additional screenings to ensure consistent electrical characteristics across different production lots. The capacitive element and lead frame of the devices are protected by a tough plastic resin, making them a durable solution. These capacitors have higher shock (100 g) and vibration (20 g) resistance compared to MLCCs, meeting MIL-STD-202 standards.

The TX3 series is available in two different case sizes, B and C, with capacitance ranging from 10 µF to 100 µF and voltage ratings between 16 V and 25 V. The capacitance tolerance can go down to ± 10%. These devices have ESR values ranging from 0.700 Ω to 2.3 Ω at a temperature of +25 °C, with ripple current up to 0.438 A and can operate at high temperatures up to +125 °C. They have lead (Pb)-free terminations, are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and fall under the category of Vishay Green products.

The newly released solid tantalum capacitors are now ready for sampling and production in small quantities. Lead times are estimated to be between 10 to 12 weeks. To inquire about pricing, it is recommended to contact a local Vishay representative.
