Enhancing Electronic Detonation Systems with Vishay’s TANTAMOUNT Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitors: Robust Design and Stringent Testing for Reliable Performance in Harsh Environments

Vishay's solid tantalum chip capacitors improve the performance of electronic detonation systems. TANTAMOUNT devices have a strong design and low 0.005CV DCL, along with rigorous testing requirements, to guarantee dependable detonation in challenging conditions.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has released a new line of TANTAMOUNT surface-mount solid tantalum molded chip capacitors that are tailored for use in electronic detonation systems. The Vishay Sprague TX3 series capacitors feature a durable design, low leakage current (DCL), and undergo rigorous testing to ensure superior performance and reliability compared to standard tantalum capacitors and MLCCs.

The capacitors released today have low DCL values of 0.005CV and a high energy density of tantalum compared to other types of capacitors. This allows them to provide more energy for reliable ignition, making them well-suited for use in remote detonation systems for mining and demolition. The combination of tantalum anode technology and Vishay's high-quality dielectric formation ensures consistent electrical performance in harsh environments.

In order to guarantee dependability, TX3 series capacitors undergo more rigorous testing than typical commercial options. Each capacitor is tested for surge current at 100%, following standard procedures, and undergoes two additional screenings to ensure consistent electrical characteristics across different batches. The capacitive element and lead frame of the devices are protected by a hard plastic resin, providing a strong and durable solution. Compared to MLCCs, these capacitors have higher shock (100 g) and vibration (20 g) resistance levels, meeting the standards set by MIL-STD-202.

The TX3 series is available in two case sizes, B and C, with capacitance ranging from 10 µF to 100 µF and voltage ratings between 16 V to 25 V. The capacitance tolerance can be as low as ±10%. These devices have an ESR ranging from 0.700 Ω to 2.3 Ω at +25 °C, a ripple current up to 0.438 A, and can operate at high temperatures up to +125 °C. They come with lead (Pb)-free terminations, are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and are considered Vishay Green.

You can now request samples and order production quantities of the recently released solid tantalum capacitors, but keep in mind there is a lead time of 10 to 12 weeks. Contact your nearby Vishay representative for pricing information.
